Meet Col. Ann Wright in CT on Wed., April 4

CCSU Peace Studies Department, Jewish Voice for Peace-New Haven, Tree of Life Educational Fund, St. Joseph University and We Refuse to Be Enemies present a fund-raiser for The Flotilla to Gaza with Col. Ann Wright on Wednesday, April 4. Dinner at 6:30 p.m. will be catered by Tangiers Market. The talk by Col. Ann Wright will begin at 7:30 p.m..

Ann Wright served 29 years in the US Army and retired as a Colonel. She was a U.S. diplomat for 16 years. She resigned from the U.S. government in 2003 to show her opposition to the war on Iraq. She is active in peace and social justice issues with Veterans for Peace and CODEPINK and is the co-author of Dissent: Voices of Conscience.

The event will be at the Islamic Association of Greater Hartford, 1781 Berlin Turnpike, Berlin, CT. Cost is $20.

Ben Ehrenreich to Speak in New Haven Nov. 11

Jewish Voice for Peace New Haven (JVPNH) is partnering with Shalom UCC to present a book talk by Ben Ehrenreich on Friday, Nov. 11 at 7:30 at the First Presbyterian Church in New Haven, 704 Whitney Ave. Ben is the author of the recently published book, The Way to the Spring: Life and Death in Palestine. Over the past three years, Ben Ehrenreich has been traveling to and living in the West Bank, staying with Palestinian families in its largest cities and its smallest villages, including Nabi Saleh, Hebron, and Umm al-Kheir. Along the way he has written major stories for American outlets, including a remarkable New York Times Magazine cover story, “Is This Where the Third Intifada Will Start?”.

The book offers a first person view of life in the West Bank: the daily challenges, pain and triumphs of resistance while living under oppressive military occupation. Reviewer Andy Shatz wrote: “As heart-breaking as it is, The Way to the Spring is also a strangely joyful book, because Ehrenreich grasps the essence of the Palestinian struggle. It’s not Islam, nor even nationalism, but the stubborn refusal of injustice, the restless search for ‘how it would feel to be free.’”

Come to a Free Viewing of Roadmap to Apartheid

The New Haven Peace Council and Jewish Voice for Peace New Haven are presenting the film Roadmap to Apartheid. In this award-winning documentary, the directors take a detailed look at the apartheid analogy commonly used to describe the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Narrated by Alice Walker (author of The Color Purple), and directed by white South African Ana Nogueira and Jewish Israeli Eron Davidson, Roadmap to Apartheid is as much a historical document of the rise and fall of apartheid in South Africa as it is a film about why many Palestinians feel they are living in an apartheid system today, and why an increasing number of people around the world agree with them.

The film will next be presented Saturday, Dec. 5, 2 p.m., at the New Haven Free Public Library, 133 Elm St. Help us bring the issue of Israeli apartheid to public attention.
