Eyewitness Report on West Bank

by Victoria McEvoy, PAR reader, delegation member to West Bank

Dear PAR reader,

Imagine being the parent of a young child. Imagine having to teach them, “If our car is stopped at a checkpoint and soldiers want to talk to me, and if I leave the car for a very long time, you must go to the road and get into any car with a green-and-white (Palestinian) license plate. They’ll take you to our village police, where you’ll tell them the three ancestral names I’ve taught you, so our family can be contacted to come get you.” Then imagine telling that little one, with false bravado, “I’ll come home as soon as I can.” This is the daily reality under occupation, as I recently heard from a Palestinian mother.

Though I fancy myself a wordsmith, I’ve been trying but failing to adequately describe for you, in a short PAR newsletter article, my recent life-altering trip to the West Bank. Instead, I offer you that true story, and the below links to compelling, articulate summaries by my co-delegates.

I can talk with you (and/or your group) about my experiences in the West Bank, how the situation in Palestine is connected to everything of concern in our world today, and the many doable options for positive change. Feel free to call me at 203-589-5429, or send me an email at vmcevoy@gmail.com.

Petition to the New Haven Board of Alders: Support a Ceasefire in Gaza

At least 30,000 Palestinians have been murdered by Israel in the last 3 months, including more than 10,000 children.

This ongoing genocide is supported by US military and with your tax money. $69,076,862 of Connecticut residents’ federal tax dollars are given annually to Israel. New Haven alone supplies $1,838,975 per year.

We call on our alders to pass an emergency resolution calling for:

  • an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza and the West Bank
  • unrestricted entry of immediate humanitarian aid into Gaza
  • an end to US funding of the violence done by the Israeli military & illegal settlements
  • release of all hostages including Palestinians arbitrarily detained by Israel
  • immediate restoration of electricity, water, food and medical supplies to Gaza
  • an end to the siege and blockade of Gaza
  • reaffirming our Board of Alders’ commitment to combat anti-Palestinian and anti-Arab racism, antisemitism and Islamophobia in all forms, and to ensure the dignity and safety of all its residents

NEW HAVEN: IT’S YOUR TURN!

No Child Behind Bars: Living Resistance from the US to Palestine

by Nina Stein, Jewish Voice for Peace

On Feb. 1, Jewish Voice for Peace New Haven will be partnering with Tree of Life to present a program “No Child Behind Bars: Living Resistance from the US to Palestine.”  The presentation will feature Ahed Tamimi*, a charismatic and articulate 15 year old from the West Bank Palestinian village of Nabi Saleh, who will discuss the brutal injustices to which she and others her age are subjected on a continuing daily basis.

Ahed will be joined by Amanda Weatherspoon, a Unitarian Universalist minister and Black liberation activist from the San Francisco Bay Area, whose ministry is centered on collective liberation and cross-movement solidarity between oppressed people. Nadya Tannous, a writer and organizer who has researched the detention of Palestinian minors since 2013, will join the two to provide additional insight into the realities Palestinian minors face within the Israeli detention system.

In addition to discussing the life of Palestinian children under Israeli occupation, the presentation will show how the struggle for human rights in Palestine is inextricably linked with the struggle for civil and human rights here in the US.

The event will take place on February 1 in New Haven at 7 p.m. at Sudler Hall, William L. Harkness Hall, Yale University on Cross Campus.

This presentation is part of a three week, 18 city U.S. tour organized by Friends of Sabeel (FOSNA). FOSNA is part of Sabeel, a movement initiated by Palestinian Christians, which promotes theological, moral and legal principles for peace in the Holy Land.

* Ahed, who was originally to appear in person, has been denied a travel visa by the U.S. State Department, so arrangements are being made to have her speak about the situation on the ground and share her story by live-stream video.
