Electricity and Heating Bills Assistance Available
Residents, advocacy groups, environmental organizations, and even some politicians are outraged over the massive increase of the prices of electricity, gas and oil.
Here are links for programs that can help lower the bills for a large number of greater New Haven-area residents:

Dear Annette Myers,
Sorry to have not replied sooner regarding your Dec. 10 post about the energy rate hikes.
You wrote:
I am a recent retiree, living off a pension monthly. The hike in the yes, the utility bill would leave me to choose to pay my utilities or purchase my prescribed medication. It is totally unfair for seniors, living off of low income to face such a tragic move once we get older, what do you do? Have heat or purchase your medicine? We need to desperately change this
thank you
The enormous rate increases are causing horrible problems for people. You’re absolutely right, it’s totally unfair. Yes, it does have to change. In addition to the programs that are linked in this above article (ELECTRICITY AND HEATING BILLS ASSISTANCE AVAILABLE), there are local groups demanding that the state legislature, Attorney General Tong, and the Public Utilities Regulatory Authority work to lower the rates. The New Haven Energy Task Force, The Sierra Club, CT Climate Crisis Mobilization, AARP and other groups are all sympathetic to what’s happening to ratepayers with the increases. People can work together to develop ways to press for changes with the utility companies and the state legislature, which sets the guidelines for how the companies operate. You can contact your state representative and senator and let them know how you’re affected by the increase. Let your alder know too. We have to make sure the politicians feel the heat. They ARE supposed to represent us.
There is a Yale research study about the various ways the energy rates are affecting New Haven tenants and landlords. The researchers also will have information about assistance programs. People who wish to take part in the interview will receive a $50 gift card. This is for New Haven residents and landlords of New Haven rental property. Here is the information from the research team with the links to find out more:
